Summary:

Overall Storm Cloud is a pretty strong release from Cairo Son. There are a few moments that weren’t quite for me but please don’t let my hang ups put you off.

A storm is gathering as Cairo Son gear up to release their latest album. With helpings of stoner rock, grunge and blues and layers of great vocals, is it a storming success that the London three-piece hope for?

Storm Clouds begins with the groove laden stoner rock sounds of “Lost in the Shadow”, a great opening track that displays what will be heard throughout this newest release. Cairo Son are adept at combining groove imbued with melody and this first track is a very good representation of their sound overall, packing a punch from the very first note to the very last.

“Lion in a Cage” showcases a heavier side to Cairo Son that isn’t often repeated on Storm Clouds-something that is somewhat missed as the release goes on-but by doling it out every now and then this heaviness becomes something of a treat. Of all of the tracks the hardest hitting by far is the lead single “Devil’s Tongue”.

Reminiscent of “Dam that River” by nineties grunge supremoes Alice In Chains, “Devil’s Tongue” is by far the strongest song on Storm Clouds. There is still melody within the choruses, but the interplay of the guitars and drums give this track the edge when compared to the rest on Storm Clouds. Not that heavy always means better, but this facet of Cairo Son’s sound is what they seem to be more confident writing. The solo is pretty cool too.

Fourth track “My Brain” is a sample of a lighter side of Cairo Son’s sound. Overall I’m not really a big fan of this song as the chorus is a little too stadium rock for my tastes. However, I do have to admit that it’s immensely catchy and I’ve found myself humming it from time to time.

“Give me Strength” is a return to heavier territory on the whole, with another melodic chorus. As far as writing goes: this is somewhat similar to “Lost In The Shadow”. There is however an interesting bass heavy riff towards the end that sounds like something that Tool would write.

The final track is the title track itself; “Storm Clouds”. While mostly revolving around one riff for a ten minutes (with faster sections every now and then) this sounds quite fresh. The impressive vocals of the lead singer cut through and give this song a real depth of emotion within the dirge like riff.
