Call To Faithful – interview

UK alt rockers are picking up new fans and making waves throughout the music scene. With an alternative sound that is framed by driven guitars and melodies that will be glued to you for an age, the emerging tunesmiths have just released their brand new single Demons – https://youtu.be/Ov2NbTu1Sdc . With all of this in mind, we asked the band to introduce themselves:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Matt Beard (vocals), Ethan Grice (bass), Will Bowen (drums) and Oscar Smith (guitar).

How and when did the band form?

Matt, Ethan & Will started practicing together in a Peterborough rehearsal room as early as 2017, just jamming out royal blood covers as a way to keep playing music after the latter two’s former band had come to an end. From there we started to grow in confidence, flexing our creative muscles and experimenting writing our own songs. We have had a few different guitarists before it clicked into place with Oscar joining the fold at the second attempt last year.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

The concept of Call to the Faithful was born in September 2018 and we played our first live show with our own original songs that December and never looked back. 2019 was a big year for us, recording and releasing our first two singles, achieving extensive radio play nationally and getting the chance to perform at shows mostly across Cambridgeshire.

Who are your musical influences?

We each have our own diverse influences but collectively you can find elements of Rage Against The Machine and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes in our sound. Some of our other key influences are the likes of Don Broco, Lower Than Atlantis, Papa Roach, Architects, Sleep Token, Enter Shikari to name just a few.

Where did the name of the band come from?

We had been practicing under a different name for months, but things never really got going and we had this moment where we felt that we needed to reset. Changing our name at that point felt like the most natural thing to do to draw a line under the old version of us and this newer reinvigorated version. Around the same time, one of our favourite bands, Don Broco, had released this song ‘Come Out To L.A.’ which has the Lyrics – “It’s my call to the faithful” – and that really resonated with us. We want to use this creative outlet to make social commentaries about the state of the world and issues that we feel passionate about, so in a sense this is our call to the faithful, our audience, and the things we believe they should hear.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Ethan, Oscar & Will all went to school together then Ethan met Matt through work around 8 years ago. As mentioned before, Ethan & Will had been in a previous band together for a number of years.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We’re writing from the heart and we lay it all out there on stage. We promise you’ll come away from our shows with your heart pumping and your synapses firing. We’ll get you hooked, and we’ll keep delivering when you come back for more.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Like a punch in the face, but in a good way. A wake-up call. Hard-hitting drums, fierce bass licks, loud Guitars with lyrics and melodies that will stay with you long after you’ve taken your headphones out.
