Summary:

Just like a Cheap Tissue the album quickly disintegrages into a snot infused melee of parts that when fused together form a little lump worthy of rolling up and stuffing in your lug holes!

For fans of The Strokes, The White Stripes, Jet and Slaughter and the Dogs.

Garage Punk ‘n’ Roll band Cheap Tissue from Los Angeles, released their self titled debut album earlier this month via Lolipop! Records. Founded in 2015 when Andrew Taylor and Jesse Youngblood got together and decided to write songs, which they felt, most people wouldn’t like very much! They were soon joined by John Tyree and drummer Matt Spizer thus the three pronged vocal attack which is Cheap Tissue came into being. Those who like to pigeon hole their music into categories may call them garage-punk/rock ‘n’ roll. According to their story here  “they prefer being referred to as a very small, extremely sub-par orchestra with no conductor and the tendency to play songs at whatever tempo they feel like.” That sounds good to me, and when I read that they had played alongside one of my favourite bands Slaughter and the Dogs they sounded even better! Do they live up to expectations? Read on and find out!

A collection of a dozen fast and furious songs with most coming in around the 2 minute mark. On first listen I was remined of bands like The Strokes, The White Stripes and Jet. Opening track, Feed The Children, a hard hitting The White Stripes meets The Strokes number to give your ears a good introduction to Cheap Tissue but what an introduction. Think more along the lines of them being struck with a hammer rather than being given a gentle, caressing stroke! A few (maybe more than a few!) more observations, Apeman is something like a fusion of Green Day’s Hitchin’ A Ride and  All Day and All of The Night by The Kinks. Cheap Tissue the Motörhead fast title track (whether the band name or the track came first, I don’t know) including the lyrics ‘She cut his head off out of spite’ needs more than a bit of cheap tissue to soak up the blood!

A couple of good old rock n roll numbers follow in My Mind and the longest track, coming in at a second under two and half minutes, Bag & Number. Where else would you put a cheap tissue but Up Your Sleeve? in your pocket maybe, a pocket sized tissue of gruff vocals and energetic riffs. Probably the mellowist track on the album comes in On The Corner.

Next up with it’s duelling riffage, a Buzzcocks vibe and the lyrics ‘You’re a Prima Ballerina. You ain’t no New York Doll’ is the superfast Dirt. I picked up, or rather, allowed for a bit of a Dead Kennedys bite in Allowance, before a bit of cramp set in as New Promotion contains some reverberating vocals to give a horror punk feel think The Cramps meet the Misfits. We stay with horror for the next song, a Frankenstein’s monster of a song with the lyrics ‘She had all the parts to be mine’ and a chugging rhythm. Then we come to the last song the fast, hard hitting Hand of Destruction which finishes the album as it started with a good old pummelling to those eardrums!

I couldn’t find an Amazon link to purchase the CD unless it was hidden somewhere in the bowels of all the links to bumper packs of toilet rolls! However you can purchase the CD for $10 and other Cheap Tissue merchandise via Lillipop Records here although I hope the t-shirts are made of stronger stuff!!!

For fans of The Strokes, The White Stripes, Jet and Slaughter and the Dogs.

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
