Summary:

Overall a great performance by Crematory if a little lackluster on the stage presence

Crematory is a gothic metal/death metal band formed in Mannheim, Germany in 1991. By the mid-1990s they were touring with My Dying Bride, Tiamat and Atrocity and they eventually played Germany’s Wacken Open Air in the  1996,  by popular demand they played again in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2008. After a break they made a welcome return in 2014. Now finally they have decided to release the whole Wacken show as a DVD titled Live W:O:A 2014, including private backstage footage.

Like all the latest Wacken dvd’s, this is shot in HD video for superior picture quality, the sound is also spot on, with Felix’s gruff vocal allowed to be heard, and not muffled by the mix.

There is not a lot to say about this dvd, apart from a few fist pumps the band do little to entertain, instead just taking it in turns to walk around the stage, but there is something endearing about Crematory that allows them to get away with this, but only just.

They power through their set list with ease, the heavy hitting rhythm section of Harald on Bass and Markus on drums providing the back drop for Katrin on Keyboards & Samples to shine.

The performance is strong throughout, rarely letting the pace settle and some of the tracks like ‘Shadowmaker’ and ‘Tick Tack’ with the duel vocal from Felix and Guitarist Matthias show just how great Crematory can be live.

Finishing off the set we have two of their best songs in my opinion, The Fallen and Virus, The band close the set with ‘Black Celebration’ originally wrote by Depeche Mode.

DVD extras are now almost obligatory, and this is no different, with three short interviews and rehearsal coverage it provides a decent insight into the inner workings of Crematory.
