Crescent – Pre Fest Interview Wacken 2014

Crescent are the Egyptian winners of this year’s Wacken Metal Battle. They play at Wacken along with all the other Metal Battle winners from all over the world to compete for the Over All Metal Battle Champion!

Crescent, EgyptCan you give the readers a quick introduction to the band.

We are Crescent based in Cairo – Egypt, formed in 1999 considered as probably the oldest band in our small metal scene in Cairo.

How would you describe your sound.

Our sound is the sound track of Egypt. The colossal great pyramids, The drums of war, The epic ancient history and our sound also reflects today’s struggles of your own self through life experience and through one’s surroundings.

How would you describe the metal music scene in your country. What has changed over the last few years?

Small scene that is growing day by day. We once had a big scene but its being revived. Bands and projects are being formed but we still have a long road to accomplish a well established Metal scene. There are several gigs and few venues where you can perform at which is quite a good privilege.

Why did you enter the WOA Metal Battle Competition.

To invade Germany! Well performing in Germany which is one of the biggest countries that have got a huge metal fan base would definitely be the right place to be! and participating in Wacken provides you the right exposure to have this great opportunity to meet people from all over the whole and perform alongside amazing bands.

What was your initial reaction when you found out that you have won & you were playing at Wacken.

It was very surprising and overwhelming. As extreme metal might not be as “popular” as heavy metal. We thought we might be considered as too aggressive or too heavy.

What was the best and worst part of the competition for you.

Being at the venue at a very early hour. And spending the whole day till we performed at around 9 pm or so, Its energy draining and that particular day we were hit by a heat wave in Cairo so it wasn’t the best experience.
The best part when everybody from the audience and other bands came to congratulate us and of course when our name was shouted out.

Would you recommend the competition to other bands. Any hints/tips for bands that are looking to enter?

Certainly I would recommend it. Music is not only about good music it’s also putting up a good show.

Wacken 2014 Metal BattleWhat can the audience expect from you at the festival!

The headbangers stage on the 30th of July at 13:35 pm will be burnt to ashes!

What has been the bands biggest achievement so far.

We were on the Metal Apocalypse tour with great friends of ours Hirax, Bonded by blood and Nuclear. We toured Germany, Holland, Belgium, Czech and Austria. It was our self-release tour of our first album titled “Pyramid slaves”

Have you ever been to Wacken before? If so when and what did you enjoy most about it?

Unfortunately never been to Wacken before.

What is your opinion of the Wacken line-up.

Amazing line up and we are personally looking forward seeing many bands.

Can you sum up Wacken in one sentence.

The biggest metal fest on earth. And the biggest metal gathering!

Any message you wish to pass on to the PM readers.

Thank you very much for this interview. Keep the metal flame burning.
