‘The Serpent Only Lies’, which crashed into the UK’s Rock And Metal Charts at 31 and 8 in the Indie Album Breakers Chart, was awarded 7/10 by Metal Hammer’s Joe Daly, who stated in the December 2016 issue that “Crowbar have consistently paced themselves ahead of their genre with a penchant for embedding absurdly catchy hooks into the walls of their riffs and concussive tracks like ‘Embrace The Light’ and the galloping ‘I Am The Storm’ showcase this prowess with chest-thumping swagger. Recalling the corrosive ferocity of their strongest efforts, ‘The Serpent Only Lies’ is steady, infectious, and heavy as fuck.”

Terrorizer’s Iain Glasper rated the album 8.5/10 in the December 2016 (Crowbar front cover) issue, proclaiming “Damn, it’s been 25 years since their debut, but Crowbar are still so fucking heavy it hurts! In fact, ‘Plasmic And Pure’ might just be the heaviest thing they have done since ‘I Have Failed’ on their self-titled sophomore album. And it’s not just those massive lumbering riffs that are in full effect; all the magic ingredients with which they constructed those immense classic releases are thankfully present on ‘The Serpent Only Lies’. Kirk still pens some of the most painfully raw, honest lyrics in metal, and his delivery is second to none, striking the perfect balance between anguish, rage and poignancy, wringing bittersweet melodies from the depths of anger and despair, where really none should reside.”
