Dispatching a sound that is a controlling, raw, and immersing, DEAD GROUND deliver music that expresses real value built upon integrity and honesty. The alternative crew release their stunning new single, We All Feel The Same, on Friday 12th October. We asked the band to introduce themselves:
What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
Ollie Harris // Guitar and lead vocals,
Edward Tucker // Bass,
Jake Friese-Greene // Drums.
How and when did the band form? Tell us anything interesting about your hometown.
Myself (Jake) and Ollie met at Exeter college in 2013. After a few impromptu jams we realised we were into a lot of the same music, and began writing songs together. After the arrival of Ed in 2015, we started playing as many local shows as we could in and around Exeter; including numerous nights at Exeter Cavern & The Phoenix.
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
We realised pretty early on that the chemistry was there! Once our first EP was released and had our first batch of songs, we all saw the direction we wanted to go in and continued writing music that came naturally to us.
Who are your musical influences?
The spectrum is so large – but the main influences are crossed between Radiohead and Jeff
Buckley to QOTSA and the older Muse. Recently, we’ve started exploring the heavier route as a result of listening to bands like Black Peaks and Cleft.
How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?
We go back as far as the Exeter college days – coming on the 5 years ago!
Where have you played or toured? Please name all countries / regions and recognised bands that you have played with.
Since starting in 2015, we’ve played areas including Bristol, Cardiff, London.
We did a week-long tour of the southern UK for the ‘No Thoughts, No Tears’ EP release in February 2018.
We had the pleasure of supporting the likes of IDLES, SHAME, and BLACK FOXXES at Exeter Phoenix. In July 2018, we were offered a spot supporting BLACK PEAKS in Truro which of course was a no-brainer!
In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?
‘Dead Ground are an extremely dynamic three-piece with a non-conventional style of songwriting, and with lyrics from the heart. This makes Dead Ground outstanding above most.’
Our intention at every show is to keep our audience captivated for an entire set. We keep our live energy persistent. We want to be real with people. Our songs and our live shows are musical translations of how we feel at those exact times, and we won’t pretend to be anything but ourselves.
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
An ‘In-your-face’ blend of bare-knuckle rock and raw, delicate atmosphere.
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
Having done a mini-tour in February 2018 for the ‘No Thoughts, No Tears’ EP, we have no plans for another tour this year. We have spent some time in Middle Farm Studios in Devon recording two new singles, which we be released later this year.
