By far, one of the most anticipated releases from the Irish underground metal movement – Death The Leveller – release their self-titled EP on June 12th, which is literally drenched with infectious riffs, tipping the hat to the death/doom scene of the 90’s, however translated with their unique ability to construct an infinite landscape of diverse compositions that leave you thirsty for more.
Death the Leveller’s music is inspired by the Death-doom scene of the early 90s, Gothic rock and a variety of other diverse sources. These influences combine to produce doom metal that is at turns epic and introspective.
The band’s name derives from the poem, ‘Death the Leveller‘ by James Shirley (1596-1666) and reflects the band’s desire to write music that faces the reality and mystery of life and death, without morbidity or fear. These songs seek to explore the possibilities offered by a fleeting lifetime, with acceptance of the inevitability of death and the futility of seeking permanence in our earthly achievements, save only the possibility of the memory of righteous actions.
Bassist Denis Dowling commented in a recent interview with overdrive.ie:- “Death the Leveller play Doom that is darkly hypnotic and takes you on a journey through the instinctual memory of mankind. The music and lyrics combine to open your mind to new possibilities of thought and deed.”
“Death the Leveller is a philosophy as much as it is a name. We are all equals in the grave. Only what you do in life marks you as different.”
