Derision – Ancient.

Clocking in at just under 50mins,the debut cd from Bolton/Wigan based thrashers Derision pulls no punches from the mauling riffs of opener Pain Of Conviction to the lightspeed buzzsaw riffs of closing track Final Solution.Quite simply,as debut albums go, the quality of material here is on a par with Burn My Eyes by Machine Head.

Not a second is wasted and Derision have an arsenal of songs here for a storming live set. Ancient is chock full of catchy but brutal riffing from guitarist  Eddie White and bassist Seddy but what nails the album for me is the vocal delivery from Tony Smith, very much in the vein of Max Cavalera/Karl Middleton and the powerhouse drumming of John Mellor  has to be heard to be believed!

Its difficult to pinpoint highlights from the album as its an adrenaline rush from start to finish. Every one of the 9 songs are hammered out with conviction but my 2 favourite tracks are the longest ones. Lasting over 6 minutes each, A Path Complete can compete with Exodus with its measured riffing and The Ancients (the video of which can be seen on youtube) which opens with a slamming riff before segueing into a stop/start breakdown halfway in then returning to the original riff. Classic thrash!

Ancient follows Derision’s self titled 4 track ep. Released in 2009, it met with reviews to inspire the band to write more material and Ancient was released on Nov.26th 2011  and can be bought from their website, Reverbnation  or  Facebook pages.
