Canada’s Calgary based thrash quartet Detherous embrace us with their debut full length album, ‘Hacked To Death ‘. Formed in 2014, they released an initial demo in 2017, and followed this with a live album last year. This is actually a breathe of fresh air for me and it’s very late 80’s thrash-based which is totally my genre any day of the week.
‘Smouldering Ashes ‘ reminds me of Holy Terror (and not for the first time this week either!) and Death. It’s brutal and feisty with some great speed changes throughout, typifying everything about the genre it has spawned from. In fact, each and every song on this album relates to the 80’s era in it’s own unique way.
Take ‘Practitioners Of Pain ‘ for example. Very S.O.D / M.O.D with perhaps a little Kreator thrown in for good measure and the influences are as clear as day here. ‘Ridden ‘ is parallel with Testament to start with. It has that haunting guitar riff associated with the band, but soon explodes into more of the same blistering paced attack.
There’s no let up whatsoever on this eight track album, that I can assure you. Title-track ‘Hacked To Death ‘ is as fierce and pulsating from start to finish. It boasts speed, mid tempo changes and total bursts of energy. Fantastic.
‘Monstrosity ‘ slows the pace down a little. Just enough to give us a breather, but still keeps the heads nodding in appreciation. ‘From Hell They Rise ‘ and ‘Brain Death ‘ complete this brilliant album. It’s a must from me in every way. Buy it.
