Dyorlich – Ivory Blacks, Glasgow. 18/7/15

Psycho-Logic

Saturday at Ivory Blacks in Glasgow was a four band show, leading up to the debut headline gig from Dyorlich. First up on the night was three piece Psycho-Logic.  They were on very early and because of that the crowd hadn’t really filled out yet, but that didn’t stop them and they were well received by the early arrivals.  The highlights of their set were current single Voices and some great solos from guitarist David Pollock.

Mason Hill

Next up was Mason Hill, fresh from their set at Wildfire Festival.  By this point the place was much busier and a lot of people seemed to already be familiar with the band as the volume level rose quite a bit.  Broken Son was a highlight and they went through their set full of energy and never let the atmosphere drop.  They announced they had a treat for everyone before launching into a great cover of Guns n Roses You Could be Mine, which sparked a mass singalong.  Their set closed with debut single Now You See Me.  The whole crowd seemed to enjoy their performance and I’ll definitely look forward to seeing a headline set from them in the future.

City of Ashes

City of Ashes win the award for dedication, having driven up from Sussex for their performance.  That is a massive journey and they deserve recognition for it.  Frontman Orion Powell acknowledged that their style is quite different from the other bands playing and thanked the crowd for listening.  Their set was taken from debut album All We Left Behind.  For me the highlights were Falling Star and their final song Waves.  When asked if they wanted a singalong to Waves or for the band to just get on with it the crowd loudly opted for a singalong, and joined in with every chorus enthusiastically.

And so we finally came to headliners Dyorlich.  Considering they played their first ever gig last month, and this was their first headline show they showed little sign of nerves, maybe just a wee bit at the start as they fist bumped each other and made faces at friends in the crowd.  The good thing was that they had a lot of support from a crowd of family and friends, including the three opening bands who all stuck around,

Dyorlich

and members of various other local bands who’d come to cheer them on.  They opened with Money for Bullets and if there were any nerves they were soon blown away.  They really seemed to be enjoying themselves as they got more and more into it.  Ivory Blacks stage is only just big enough to accommodate a five piece band so there wasn’t much room to manoeuvre but they made the most of it.  Highlights included Awake and Puppeteer, and the band seemed to grow more in confidence and stature as the gig went on.  By this point the crowd weren’t cheering because they were mates cheering their friends on, but because they were watching a really good rock show.  As they closed with Brainwash and left the stage to roars of approval the band looked over the moon and if that’s how they perform on their very first headline gig, I’m predicting the only way is up for Dyorlich.
