We had caught up with UK Emo Alt-Rockers, ELESSAR who release their new EP, Is This All We Are, on Friday 27th April. …….
What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
Ricky Powell – Vocals / Guitar,
Alex Evans – Guitar / Vocals,
Dan James – Drums,
Jack Gambling – Bass.
How and when did the band form?
We all got together in 2016, having played shows together for a few years in different bands, we figured it was finally time to hook up and start a project of our own! Everything happened pretty quickly, then a 3 months later we were off on our first tour!
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
Almost instantly! There was so much excitement and good vibes within the band that writing and performing came really easy for us! One of the first things we did was a book a 7-day tour and hit the road. It was probably at that point we knew things felt good. Everyone seems to know each other’s strengths, so as a team the band gets on with things and we all vibe off each other on stage really well!
Who are your musical influences?
We have such a wide range of influences, and it varies heavily from member to member. But we try to tailor our sound around the likes of, Mallory Knox, Lower Than Atlantis & Don Broco. It’s a very British Alt Rock sound, but with the Brit scene doing so well at the moment, we don’t see that as a bad thing at all!
How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?
A long time! Jack and I have been friends for over 20 years now. Grew up together and have been inseparable ever since. Dan and Alex are from the same town too and we pretty much all met at the same time around 7/8 years ago! it’s only been the last 4 years or so years we’ve really started to hang out all the time.
Where have you played or toured?
Touring has always been a big focus of ours, we’ve been out at least 8 times up and down the country since starting the band. Building our own followings across the country! Although, London, Birmingham, Leeds & Newcastle are probably our top cities to play! But we do well in surrounding areas too. As for bands, we’ve supported the likes of Boston Manor and Crooks locally, while joining tours with the likes of Altered Sky and Speaking in Shadows. Our most recent show was at o2 Academy 3 with Alvarez Kings which was pretty cool!
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
Very passionate and full of energy! We like to keep our riffs meaty but match them with catchy vocal melodies. So there’s a little something for everyone! Whether it’s a sad song or an angry song, we always put 100% into it.
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
We’re currently booking one! We’re hoping to head out around early May time to tour the EP. Nothing confirmed yet, but we’re hoping to have some dates soon. So, keep an eye on our socials for that.
