Blues singer Elles Bailey returns with her new album Beneath The Neon Glow, a release I’ve been looking to review for quite some time. It will be out via Cooking Vinyl on August 9th 2024, consisting of ten songs of sheer beauty, point proven by opening track ‘Enjoy The Ride’. It’s a first class ticket tune as this hefty toe tapper ticks all the boxes as chiming guitar lines and a bright and breezy shuffle surge towards stratospheric height shout em out loud and proud choruses.

‘Ballad Of A Broken Dream’ is a bass heavy tight but still loose heartbreaker, as once again, the choruses could charm the birds from the trees, closing on delightful piano and acoustic guitar.

‘Leave The Light On’ is all about the vocals as Elles swoops and soars sublimely, bolstered by brief touches of vibrato to give this jaunty jig an extra edge around wiry guitar lines, ending on a precisely picked guitar solo.

‘1972’ is a sassy, classy soul ridden short, but still sweet song with earworm brass accompaniment for a joyous five minutes.

It’s time for another soul searching ballad as ‘Silhouette In A Sunset’ makes time stand still from the first listen to repeated plays as it ebbs and flows majestically along, closing on a poignant silence.

The mood changes as ‘Truth Ain’t Gonna Save Us’ for this dirt under the fingernails rocker, courtesy of fretboard melting guitar overload.

‘If This Is Love’ is a full on romper stomper of speaker rattling drum prowess, guitar stabs, all coming together for over the top choruses of gospel tinged beauty.

Vociferous backing vocals throughout ‘Let It Burn’ add melody and muscle for another tearjerker and soul stealer to have you hanging on every lyric.

My personal highlight comes from ‘Love Yourself’ as this rocker takes its foot off the gas when needed to for the choruses to shimmer, pinned down by a rock solid drum backing.

The album seems to end far too soon as closing track ‘Turn Off The News’ is a subtle ballad that meanders along for four fulfilling minutes of sublime balladry.

The album sees Elles intertwine British roots Rock Americana and blues across ten powerfully uplifting tracks. It is an exploration of love’s myriad forms, through lyrically vulnerable and brutally honest songwriting.

Elles adds,”I might be new to some people, but I have been around for quite a long while. I’m not here for a flash-in-the-pan moment. I want a long-term career in music. I love what I do. I love that I get to take it around the World. So if I can continue to do that, and just play to larger audiences and continue to grow, that’s exactly what I’ll do”.
