The Emergency Please – Interview

THE EMERGENCY PLEASE have just released their breathtaking new EP, Remember You. We had the guys in for a catch-up……

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

Karan Master – Vocals & Guitar, Jono Powell – Bass & Backing Vocals, Sam Garnett – Drums.

How and when did the band form?

The band started as a song writing vehicle for myself (Karan). I was playing alongside different bass players and drummers under the name “The Emergency Please”. Jono and Sam joined the band a few months ago and we’ve been writing a lot of new material since.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Having Jono and Sam join a few months ago has really improved the chemistry and vibe. We’ve know each other and played together for a long time but this is the first we’ve all been in a band together. We’ve been writing and gigging a lot. The last few gigs especially, we’ve played songs that were written the day before. We keep get really excited by an idea or a feel and then keep going till it’s a song.

What are your musical influences?

I grew up on a lot of alt rock (The Smashing Pumpkins, The Chilis, Linkin Park) and pop punk/emo music (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, The Used). I will always have time for and listen to any Jimi Hendrix or John Mayer. Learning their songs when I was younger was something I was really into. I love how they made the guitar sound larger than life but in a subtle way. I’m also really into hip hop and neo soul artists guy’s like Maxwell, D’Angelo, Gallant, Anderson Paak.

What is your favourite or most funny, wildest moment or story as a band?

We go to play a gig with Kurt Travis and Andrés on their UK tour. We’ve been fans of both of them for a while and playing on the same bill was really fun. Great guys and they played a killer show.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?

Sam and I met at the live music society in the University of Southampton about 4 years ago, when I used to study there. I met Jono and a jam night in town a couple of years back. There’s a lot of jam nights in Southampton so we used to hang out at those and play together pretty often.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

Though the core of the band is emo/pop punk, our sound fixates on groove, jazz chordal harmonies and displays an intense yet soulful tone.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Jazz emo music or neo soul pop punk
