Back and fresh from playing a great set at the Y-Not Festival, Eva Plays Dead kicked off their mid-summer tour in their home town of Derby. After reviewing the groups last album ‘Guilt Trips and Sins’ for Planetmosh back in June, I then gave it a top 10/10 and put them into my top ten list of bands to listen to for 2013. Now I had the opportunity to see them play live for the first time.
Getting to the gig early, I had chance to meet and say hello to EPD. Suitably mesmerized by Zach’s magnificent hair style, we all chatted and got to know each other outside the venue and talked about the forth coming gig.
Now time to watch their first support group, we made our way into the venue.
‘SilverJet’. This band describe themselves as a ‘Dirty Rock’ group, but dirty or not, they were bloody great and went down well with the slowly growing crowd despite a band member and guitar missing. Coming from Sheffield this group is no stranger to the stage as they,ve toured with countless top groups in the U.K. and Europe, plus managing to do a tour in the U.S. From their first song to the last, it was a class act and I’m glad to have seen them play live and look forward to seeing them again.

Next on the stage was a very young group of three guys called ‘Theia‘, and hailing from Burton Upon Trent. I’m learning to expect the unexpected these days, and this was one of those ‘WOW’ moments!
First formed in 2012 and already starting to make a name for themselves in the U.K. rock world, this un-signed trio I’m sure are destined for a bright future. Being only just old enough to sniff the barmaids apron, their rocket fueled energetic and enthusiastic performance put smiles on all the punters faces watching them on Saturday night. While the two guitarists did their own thing, youngest member TJ put in a really inspiring set on the drums. Reminiscent to me of late ‘Who’ drummer Keith Moon at his peak! Top marks, and well done.

Main feature group of the night Eva Plays Dead took to the stage with a quite ease about them. Then announcing (very loudly) to the house that they were ready with a “Get away from the bar, and come in here!” They then proceeded to take the Vic by storm and give us a great showcase of their album hits. Just as I’d expected, EPD played a blinding set and sounding no different to their studio recorded CD’s they continued to please a now very happy crowd.
It had to be another 10/10 for Saturday nights gig, despite the Vic’s compact and very warm venue they quite literary gave their all in a top class performance. Starting off with ‘BadGirl‘ in explosive form Tiggy and the guy’s then followed this up by playing a stream of great songs. By the time we got half way through their set you could see the band were working hard and at the same time were having some light hearted ‘inter-band’ banter. A few improvisations during a couple of tracks did nothing to detract from the performance, in fact it was nice to see this evolving. It sort of made the gig even more personal to the folks who came to support them.
