Fallen Mafia, a hard hitting female fronted, four piece from the North East (of England) were formed in 2011 and have played with big names like Y&T, Michael Monroe and Crashdiet, to name but a few. Having toured relentlessly they have been quiet for a year or two, and have had a few line-up changes along the way. The band have just released new EP Asylum to give people a taste of how they have evolved over the years, and to show what the current line-up sounds like, with a view to releasing their first album next year. Asylum is a limited release on North East based label Big Bad Riff, an independent record label, which specialises in short run physical releases and digital distribution.
Each of the four tracks on this taster EP is given a succinct title. The opening track is Burn, with rapid fire drumming, intricate riffs and a nod towards Black Sabbath. Next we get down and Dirty with a chugging beat and an essence of Marilyn Manson say Beautiful People. Then we come to the title track Asylum with an eclectic mix of influences, an ethereal start leading into an Red Indian drumbeat, harmonised backing vocals and some countrified licks. Think something along the lines of Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead Or Alive meets Dead Nature by Fire Red Empress although vocalist Hannah’s tone has a much coarser quality than Jennifer Diehl’s think something more along the lines of Janis Joplin. Then we come to the fourth and final track AD50 with Hannah showing her versatile vocal range and trying some different singing techniques.
Four tracks which give you a taste for more of what Fallen Mafia have in store with the upcoming album. Think something along the lines of Black Sabbath meets Marilyn Manson with Janis Joplin on vocals.
