It amazes me that Collateral are still a support band considering the amount of coverage they have gotten along with regular touring. The crowd is cheering loudly as the band enter the stage followed swiftly by the energy ball that is Angelo Tristan the band launch into Glass Sky, a cracking opener that is getting everyone singing along.
With limited time the band are ploughing through their set featuring a slower rocker from the new album Final Stand and most impressive it is too but back to the old stuff, Mr Big Shot gets a huge cheer of recognition and I’ll admit it has a fine groove to it as does No Place To Love.
Watching Angelo is exhausting stuff, he certainly knows how to work an audience and he certainly does work hard, as does all of the band – such is their self belief.
However, it’s ballad time and On The Long Road, their latest single and another from their forthcoming album, sees him don his acoustic guitar and everyone sways along, and there is a young lady in the front row dabbing her eyes to this emotional piece.
About This Boy continues the theme albeit with a slight country rock feel, I can feel this being played on the radio in the USA before Merry Go Round gets us back on the rocking track.
Another great rocker Midnight Queen is a fine way to end their set, it’s got loads of people dancing, and I’ll readily admit it is very catchy and I might have done a bit of dad dancing to it!
Their 45 minute is so good it seems to fly by, such is the quality of their playing and their songs. And whilst Angelo is the focus on stage the whole band played amazingly

To celebrate their 40th anniversary F.M. have already completed a short South American tour and are now heading out on an extensive U.K. tour followed by more dates in Europe. I’ll readily admit that I hadn’t realised the band’s reach is so extensive. I saw them on the Indiscreet tour back in ‘87 so this is like revisiting an old friend.
The expectations are high for the band as they enter the stage to the Pearl & Dean theme and a big up speech as they launch into Digging Up The Dirt. The sound is exceptional and everyone is happy.
There is a chant of “FM FM FM” from the crowd – these truly are fans of the band.
Someday (You’ll Come Running) is exceptional and Jim Kirkpatrick’s organ playing pours through the song, whereas the Eric Martin song Everytime I Think Of You has a harder edge but nonetheless has that F.M. mark of quality with Jim Kirkpatrick’s guitar playing setting the stage ablaze.
The chant of “FM FM FM” happens again, the crowd are loving this band and this performance!!
From the 40th anniversary record comes Out Of The Blue, this is probably my favourite performance of the evening, whilst The Dream Had Died is typical of the 80’s AOR sound and everyone here is lapping it up and singing along with the band having as much fun as the audience.
Synchronized has an 80’s Go West feel to it and it has me grooving along and Say It Like It Is is nice and upbeat. The slower ballad Closer To Heaven is bluesier but nonetheless powerful. Ending the main set is Turn This Car Around which has become something of an anthem and it has everyone singing along.
A keyboard solo from Jim marks the beginning of the well earned encore which turns into the soulful Story Of My Life highlighting singer Steve Overalnd’s vocal prowess. The band finish with On The Other Side Of Midnight – how could they not play this?
Astonishing stuff.
