Fozzy – Fibber Magee’s, Dublin – 06/03/2015

Call To Arms

Midway through their well-received tour Chris Jericho’s hard rock outfit Fozzy made a pit stop in Fibber Magee’s in Dublin. The night provided an outstanding atmosphere and a great performance form all the bands involved: Fozzy, The Dirty Youth and local band Call to Arms.

The night kicked off with a triumphant showing from Dubliner’s Call to Arms. The young band destroyed their stage hammering through their razor sharp mix of hardcore and metalcore.  They sounded huge and played better a strong original set with an awesome cover of Korn’s “Right Now” thrown in for good measure. Frontman Dean Donnelly seems to give his all on the night and their loyal fans loved it. For me, they were band of the night and be sure to pick up their upcoming EP ‘Invictus’ and check them out on Facebook.

The Dirty Youth

Next up were The Dirty Youth. This Welsh female fronted rock group didn’t do it for me. They played great and their songs had a lot of good punk and metal elements. However, this stuff isn’t my bag so it was rather lost on me. I did enjoy their set and I can strongly recommend them if you enjoy this genre.

The night rounded off with the main event: Y2J in Dublin and the packed crowd absolutely loved everything this guy did. There was a buzz unlike anything that I have felt in Fibber’s in a very long time. Jericho and his cohorts fed off this and played a stomper of a show. Opening up with “Do You Wanna Start A War” from their latest album of the same name. The set started strong but would meander at points. While technically sound from a playing standpoint, the only issue I have with the set is the quality of the songs. I really don’t like the new album and the songs hurt this band. That said, when played live they become so much better.

Fozzy

Jericho is an amazing frontmen his personality and likeability make Fozzy a draw before they play a single note. But the band are great and each member plays with a punk rock attitude that is super enjoyable. The Fibber’s venue really worked a treat to foster this atmosphere. At no point, did the crowd waver in their admiration of Jericho however their Abba cover, surprisingly, did cause a few raised eyebrows from the back of the crowd. I have no idea why; Fozzy do an outstanding cover of this classic. The band hit their stride with their older material and the Dublin fans would agree. Their midset grouping of songs were made up from their back catalogue of tracks including “God Pounds His Nails”, “To Kill A Stranger” and an extended version of “Enemy”. This delighted the crowd, and myself as a long time Fozzy fan.

I can’t fault the band at all; and I would recommend getting out to see these guys play. Jericho loves this and he puts everything that he has into this venture. Totally worth your time and money to see him being “the best in the world at what he does.”
