Younger metal fans won’t remember the last time Galactic cowboys released an album – that was way back in 2000. Having released six albums and an EP between 1991 and 2000 the band split, and apart from a couple of very brief reunions have been silent for the last seventeen years. Now though the silence is at an end with the release of “Long way back to the moon”.
They’re not an easy band to describe. They’re definitely metal with a strong thrash element, but that’s just part of their sound as you have progressive metal, rock and even pop harmonies (check out “Believing the hype” for a good example of that). They’re metal – in the same way Faith No More are metal, but neither band fits into a single genre easily, and that’s both their strength and weakness. It’s a real strength as they sound like nobody else, but conversely when someone asks you what the band sound like they’re hard to describe.
It’s definitely a unique sound and a bit crazy but I have to say I do like it. Those 60’s pop style harmonies shouldn’t work in a metal album but somehow they do. It’s impossible to describe the album and do it justice, so check out a couple of videos for songs from the album, below. They will give you an idea of what to expect, but with so much variety in the album it really is just a taste of what to expect with so much more to discover once you listen to the whole album.
Galactic cowboys are a band that span so many genres it’s hard to describe – they’ve got a unique sound and it’s one that is a real pleasure to listen to.
