GARY HUGHES: ‘Waterside’ & ‘Decades’ – new album and solo career collections by TEN frontman out 12.03.21
British singer-songwriter and TEN frontman Gary Hughes has announced that his new solo album, ‘Waterside’, will be released on 12th March via Frontiers Music Srl. Released simultaneously is a 2xCD best-of collection entitled ‘Decades’ that encompasses three decades of Hughes’ solo work in a newly remastered format, including songs taken from his albums ‘Precious Ones’, ‘Veritas’, ‘Once and Future Kings Parts I and II’ and ‘Gary Hughes’.
Plus rarities that have only previously been issued in Japan. ‘Decades’ is an album of Hughes’ influences and experiences that opens the door to his past while also pointing towards his future.
“It is great to step back into solo mode again for a short while,” Hughes enthuses. “The songs on my new album are filled with light and shade and are much lighter than my heavier and deeper TEN material. We live in such testing times and I have tried to create a piece of Melodic AOR that might lift the spirit and allow for a little much-needed escapism. There is definitely a positive feel-good factor to this new collection of songs and I hope that fans enjoy listening to it.”
The feel-good factor is prevalent in both the album title song and its video, which Hughes explains “is a very straightforward jacket, jeans and Fender Telecaster affair. A slice of Anglo-Americana. A nod back to the mid-’80s and the golden age of laid-back melodic rock. We enjoyed making this one immensely!”
Over the course of three decades, Gary Hughes has established himself as one of the UK’s premier Melodic and Hard Rock singers and songwriters. With fourteen studio albums released as part of TEN, a rock opera (in two parts), and much more, the body of work he has amassed is truly impressive.
His work in TEN presents a hard rock sound that is rooted in the tradition of acts such as UFO, Whitesnake and Rainbow, while his solo material has offered a more melodic sound with roots in the late ’80s AOR and Melodic Rock scene. ‘Waterside’ is his first solo record since ‘Veritas’ over a decade ago, although musically is more akin to what his fans might have expected to follow his self-titled and ‘Precious Ones’ albums in the ’90s. It also contains hints of early TEN.
