Summary:

Glenn Hughes’ latest offering, Resonate, should come with some kind of health warning. Loud, proud and indisputably ballsy, this is an album that demands to be played with the volume switch cranked so far over to the right the woofers in your amps will complain.

From the very instant the opening track – and debut single from the album – Heavy kicks in, the mood is set for an all out rock experience to rival any other. With The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Chad Smith’s pounding drum mastery providing a stunning pulse, what follows had better be outstanding.

And it is.  My Town, with Pontus Enborg providing the sticks, this time, sees Hughes’ bass direct this multi-toned jamboree of rhythmic paradise from the front, underscored by the in-turns crunching-then-glossy lead guitar riffs of co-producer Soren Andersen, which serve to weave the parts of the sum into a magical whole magnificently.

Let It Shine is a lot cooler, but the vibrancy of its lyrics and the undertone given by band newcomer Lachy Doley’s keyboards really make its mark, with Hughes’ Plant-esque vocals making this a track of such depth and energy it is impossible not to smile at its urgency.

Glenn Hughes’ voice has never been in finer fettle and his beautifully crafted lyrics, energised musicianship and deft touch at the co-production helm all make Resonate a contender for album of the year and no mistake.

God of Money is something of a throwback to Hughes’ day with Deep Purple; its beat instantly recognisable and yet impossibly fresh. Then there’s the funk-filled back beat of Landmines which could not be much further removed from that which precedes it if it tried: think Doobie Brothers with attitude and you’re nearly there.

Closing out on two out-and-out gems in the shape of Stumble & Go and the ultra-smooth Long Time Gone is a masterstroke of ingenuity which completes what is the most delightful music circle imaginable.

Resonate is an album oozing with class, bleeding with style and sweating with beads of invention that cannot go unnoticed by anybody with a love of rock-blues at its finest.
