UK noisy newcomers Gravves are set to break out to the nation with their blistering new EP Rattle, which hits stores on Friday 10th February, through Loner Noise Records. We chatted with the band about their background:
What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
Adam Hughes – Bass, vocals, Dave Thomas – Guitar, vocals, and Tom Williams – Drums
How and when did the band form?
We all spent time in different local bands with varying levels of success. David and Adam had known each other from school, and I got to know them later on. We used to watch each others’ bands and play together at local gigs, before eventually ending up in the same room playing music together. Chester and Wrexham were the formative areas – back then it seemed you could play gigs anywhere. Cellar bars, nightclubs, house parties…
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
This year. We’ve played music together before, which eventually came to an end, later returning to it. We started playing the sort of music which got us started really – noisy, abrasive rock tunes.
What are your musical influences?
We’re big fans of Queens of The Stone Age, Death From Above 1979, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, , Future of the Left, Foals to name a few
What is your favourite or most funny, wildest moment or story as a band?
We recently filmed a video for the opening track to the EP, My Pet Rihanna. We filmed it on Hallowe’en. We squeezed as many people as possible into my flat in fancy dress, with strobe lighting and huge amounts of alcohol. The clean up the next day was insane, but totally worth it.
Where have you played or toured? Please name all countries / regions and recognised bands that you have played with.
We have played around the UK including gigs in Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Birmingham and festivals including Focus Wales, Tramlines Festival and Threshold Festival. We have played alongside bands such as SLAVES, NOTHING BUT THIEVES, DZ DEATHRAYS, GOD DAMN, HECK, MISTY MILLER.
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
Aggressive, distorted guitars with a mix of melodic, droning and shouting vocals. Occasional furious blasts of energy which lead up to big dynamic sections.
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
We’re currently booking dates for the new year, and we hope to announce some very soon.
