Hammerfest 3 – 2011 (Festival)

Friday

The day for us kicks off with up and comers The Treatment playing an exciting mix of classic rock with a slightly blues feel to it, which got the crowd warmed up.

They are definitely a band to keep an eye out for in the future.

Opening up the main stage are California’s Holy Grail adding a power metal feel to tonight’s proceedings. A band made up mostly of former members of White Wizzard we were expecting great things from them but their set was average and never really seem to hit the heights that we were expecting.

Following on we have the mighty Sylosis.

Having had the privilege to witness them a couple of times I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people where there to see them perform ~ it looks like the relentless touring is finally paying off for them as tonight they put on their most intense performance to date.

One to watch for the future.

Wolf crank it up a notch with their own brand of NWOTHM metal.

Having had the pleasure to watch them when they first played Hammerfest back in 2009 it is good to see them return.

Another power packed bruising performance from the crazy Swedes.

Highlights from the set: Hail Ceaser, Evil Star and Voodoo

Finnish battlemetal giants Turisas are next.

Judging from the amount of facepaint around Pontins I think it is fair to say that these were one of the most eagerly anticipated bands of the weekend – despite being a few members short they did not disappoint.

Opening track To Holmgard and Beyond sets the scene for a battle metal onslaught.

The only dampeners to their set was the overly long run up to their classic cover of Rasputin and the shortness of the set.

Highlight of the set: Stand Up and Fight

Following on we have Accept.

Finally playing the UK after a gap of what seems like an eternity it was great to finally one of the founding godfathers of German metal back where they belong ~ playing top spots on UK festivals.

Opening up with Teutonic Terror Accept set about teaching the gathered masses their lesion in classic rock.

Highlight of the set: Balls To The Wall

Ending the day for us are My Ruin.

Being one of the main bands on the Second Stage is never easy for any band.

It was even more difficult for My Ruin since vocalist Tarrie B had lost her voice which resulted in a cancelled gig earlier in the week.

Tarrie spent most of her time on the barrier with the fans passing the mic out for anyone to help sing the songs.

My Ruin made a brave attempt but didn’t hit the heights that they should have ~ hopefully we will see them return next year with a fully fit Tarrie.

Highlight of the set: Excommunicated

Set List:

Stick it to me

Diggin for Ghosts
