Summary:

“Black Forest Metal” by Hanzel Und Gretyl is 43 minutes of dark, intense and extreme surprises, salted with irony and inspired by the most evil metal bands you could find and finished with solid production.

It became quite fashionable for industrial/EBM bands to go more and more aggressive – more metal. Hanzel Und Gretyl is no exception. They started their metal approach some time earlier and when 2014 knocked on the door they were already working on the new album. This new Dark and heavy album from the American industrial metal duo is called “Black Forest Metal” and it is their seventh studio album.

Starting with satanic incantation for the intro “Hoia Baciu”, the band slowly reveals their darkest side and go with black metal sound in title track “Black Forest Metal”. In the whole set of 11 tracks, band uses both English and German languages, lots of guitar solos, mixed vocals and humor in their lyrics. Irony (clearly felt in e.g. “More Metal Than The Devil” or “Evil As Fukk”) is definitely part of this bands signature sound (besides pseudo Teutonic/sci-fi genre) and definitely gives album its’ charm.

The album surprises with the heavy sound and hints of Pantera or even Carpathian Forest, mixing it all up with electro sounds and pseudo evil imagery. There is even the evil fairy-tale about the big bad wolf “Big Bad Kyrzwolf”, which is completely opposite sound compared to Aesthetic Perfection’s this year album “ ‘Til Death” containing cheesy soft sound track “Big Bad Wolf”. This one is definitely more evil, contains constant wolf howling and this old sound of the 60s/70s (it reminds me of even earlier times and old silent movies with the music on the top) in the background of the slow guitar riffs and low dark sound vocals. Just right after the dark story, album gets back to the faster tempo and satanic themes, inspired by black metal.

Reviewers pick: “Evil As Fukk” – it simply sums up the whole point of this album.
