Huntress have been through a lot since the 2013 release of Starbound Beast; from member changes, to guitarist Eli getting brutally assaulted on the UK tour and having to miss a show, and Frontwoman Jill Janus recently discussing her battle with mental illness, and recent fight with cancer. I am happy to say she kicked cancer’s ass and her openness discussing her fight has been very inspiring to many of us. Whenever I’ve been lucky enough to meet Jill and the guys, I always take with me just how hard working and determined they are, having relentlessly toured and put out 2 albums that were incredibly strong, they have now added another fantastic release. Static really is a testament of all their hard work, and after all they have been through how much they have grown as a band. I cannot wait for Jill to get back to 100% and Huntress to get back to tearing up the stage as they do best.
Live they really are one of the top bands out there now delivering high powered performances; my first ever time I saw them was in 2013, I headed down to the 3rd stage at Download as I’d heard some good things about them, and my first memory is Jill screaming Senicide in my face, I was sold from that point on and eagerly awaited new music from them! I am eagerly awaiting my vinyl of Static! Strangely enough every Huntress album has started with an ‘S’ Jill has said its intentional, any theories on that one guys?
So where to start with Static, kicking off with the soon to be new video track Sorrow with Huntress’ trademark fast paced sound with Blake leading the charge with his stand out lead guitars, and Jill’s incredible vocal work. Kicking into the beautifully dark Flesh; which we have been treated to a fantastic lyric video of, and a personal favourite of mine. Another highlight has to be Mania, this is really different to what we have previously had from Huntress, stripped back and a lot more vulnerable, it really shows what a beautiful tone Jill has to her voice, and how versatile she is, going from full ‘crone’ to clean vocals in an instant, really is a great track.
Another track I have to mention is Harsh Times on Planet Stoked, I’ve been lucky enough to catch it live last year and it’s been stuck in my head since then. You can’t listen to this track without head-banging along and screaming the chorus!
Overall Static really is something special, I’ve had it stuck on repeat the last few days and I am loving it more with each spin. Expect that signature Huntress sound but with something more, all the hardships and hard-work the band have been through have really turned it into a special monster. Huntress have worked hard and really earned their place in the metal scene, Static gets 5 stars from me!
Static is out September 25th on Napalm Records!
