There is something instantly warm & welcoming about Illustr8rs opening track ‘Your Animal’. There’s a snappy riff with enough meat to entice, and then the vocal beams like a neon sign. Scott Sharp excels throughout this ep, and in Your Animal there’s a very cool Robert Plant vibe. A big song that would not be out of place echoing around an arena.
The intensity goes up a few notches with ‘Something Biblical’ as it storms in with thrusting bass and divine guitar layers. This track has grit and should sit well with any Heaven’s Basement fans. ‘Swimming With Anchors’ sees their sound tip ever so slightly into alternative rock groove with bass chops reminiscent of Therapy? and Scott capturing the essence of the song beautifully with a Michael Stipe (REM) tone. ‘Shush Shush’ goes a little left field but shows depth and diversity to Illustr8rs songwriting. And is catchy as hell! Overall a great introduction to a band that have moved on leaps and bounds since their Black Wolf days.
Gloriously on track to be the name on everyone’s lips before this year ends.
