Incite

After a bit of a break from the whole writing thing, I am so happy to have something that is out of this world to review. To my great pleasure, a bunch of lads that dominated Dublin a few months ago are my next review. Incite are back and you’re in for a good time with their new material.

Like their last offering “Up In Hell,” groove metal titans Incite pack a punch that smashes the idea of groove metal into the ground as the riffs come fast, the vocals tears flesh off the bone and your neck is pulverised from head banging. BUY THIS ALBUM!

It’s hard to explain why, just listen to it, this one is a straight buy. There’s not one bad track on the album, no filler and never did I find myself needing to skip bits of the songs or skip a track. From the word go, “Oppression” slays.

Let’s start with the title track, “Oppression.” This one kicks in with a glorious riff that gives way to the palm-muted chugging meat of the tune. The low end and bass are locked and the groove is mighty. It’s a great mission statement and sets the tone for the album.

“Worst of Me” is very Lamb of God sounding and has some really fun bits in it. “Life Disease” is a wonderful throwback to early Soulfly and really shows the Cavalera roots of this band: thumping pace, solid riff with lovely melodic picking. The bridge of “Life’s Disease” is brutal.

“I Want It All” is groove metal to a tee. Fast and loose riffs based around pumping drums and smooth grooving bass. Bass is key in groove metal, folks, without it the whole thing falls apart. Christoper Elsten brings his “A Game” here.

“Forced Into Life” is the faster end of groove metal. Yes, a lot of the tunes play with the tropes that you’ve heard a lot before but they’re done so well that you won’t care and you’ll get hooked. Incite are a band that seem to have perfected a genre that can be very hit or miss.

“Lost Reality” and “Stagnant” are thrashy tunes that get both heavy and melodic in equal measure. The guitars and drums are outstanding on these and they allow Richie to kill it on his vocal track. The opening to “Stagnant” is the most metal thing you’ll hear all day outside of Hatred’s last album.

Each member of the band is on fire and there’s so much energy on this one that it makes me really want to see them live, right now. These lads know how to get you into their tunes. The production is top notch; it’s what you want to hear from a groove metal album: crisp guitars, warm bass and powerful drums. The vocals are killer throughout; everything just works.

If you’re stuck for an album to check out that you’ll enjoy from start to finish, look no further. “Up in Hell” was an album that I loved and “Oppression” is one that I love even more. I can’t wait to see Incite live.
