Interview with Tormentor from Desaster

I caught up with Tormentor from Desaster via email for a interview about the band and their new album ‘The Arts of Destruction’

What was the inspiration or starting point for the new album The Arts of Destruction (i.e a riff or an idea)?
Mainly it is the riff. The music was done first, after that I tried to catch a theme that fits the song.

Do you have periods for touring and writing or do ideas for tracks come at any time?
We are not a professional band at all, so we write songs when there is an idea, in every period. Normally we only play single shows at the weekend, from this fact there is no need to write songs on a tour.

How important are strong lyrics to you in your tracks? Is it more about the music or does the idea of promoting an idea or way of thinking feature quite heavily in what you want to achieve with your music?
I don’t know if somebody thinks we have strong lyrics, but I try to catch the feeling of a song and I try to make it stronger with the right words. I don’t know if it works all the time. The music comes first, but for me the lyrics are important to release some anger.

Infernal, how does it feel to have been playing since 1988 and to have recorded your 7th album?
Very good, we had reached our goals a long time a go, I didn’t believe that the Desaster took that long. And it’s still refreshing to make noise in 2012!

Infernal how would you say your music has evolved over the years?
Not that much, it’s still Desaster, you can hear the same influences as on our debut from 1996. We get older an fatter but the songs remains the same. hahahaha

What was it like working at the ToxoMusic Studios and mixing at the Temple of Disharmony?
The Toxomusic studios are something like our home studio, we know the owner (Wally, Toxoplasma) and this studio is in Koblenz, our home town. We gave the recording to Mr. Angel (Ex- IMPENDING DOOM) and he send us the first mixes via email. We weren’t at the Temple Of Disharmony. We gave all our hope to Mr. Angel, who did a really good job.

I love the artwork for the album The Arts of Destruction, who created it and did they capture the feel album in the image in your opinion?
Axel Hermann did the artwork. He also did the artworks for a lot of “Century Media”- bands like ASPHYX; TIAMAT, MORGOTH. We only gave him the title “THE ARTS OF DESTRUCTION” and what we get was the picture you see on front of our new record. He did a really fine job.

Are you excited to be playing the Death Doomed The Age?
Not more than for any other concerts. Ok, this seems to be a real classic festival, with many great bands, but there no reason to be excited. We will deliver 100% Desaster. Like (nearly) every time.

Do you get nervous before live shows? Is there anything you do to ‘get in the zone’?
I don’t get nervous before a show, but it’s hard to wait. Mainly you wait the complete day to get on stage. We drink a few beers and when I go to the stage something changes, it’s like someone pushing a button. But I don’t have to prepare for that, it’s comes naturally. That’s good and easy.

Any favourite touring stories or experiences you would like to share?
There are a lot of stories, some long forgotten but still enough to figure out something special.

Thank you all very much for your time! Aisha
