Summary:

After the comeback with the album Silverthorn in 2012, Haven is the 11th studio offering from Kamelot and the 2nd album to feature vocalist Tommy Karevik. In this album I feel Karevik has really established he is exactly where he belongs in Kamelot; by having more input in the writing process, there is a more personal feel to the vocals style and lyrics.

I love how you are thrown straight into the first track ‘Fallen Star’; it’s a nice mix-up from the usual format of having an orchestral track first. This then leads into ‘Insomnia’ with some very tasty bass lines and catchy hooks on the chorus. ‘Citizen Zero’ is one of my favourite tracks on the album with killer riffs, a blistering guitar solo and a glimpse at the range Karevik’s vocals are capable of.

Haven also features guests Charlotte Wessels (Delain) and Troy Donockley (Nightwish) on the track Under Grey Skies, with truly beautiful results; I really like how this combination makes this track something special, and stand out from the rest of the album.

We are also incredibly lucky to get treated to 2 tracks featuring guest vocals from Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy) including my personal favourite ‘Revolution’ one of the heavier tracks on the album, and putting the range of Alissa’s vocals to very good use.

Overall this is a fantastic album and each time I listen to it, it grows on me even more so. 11 albums in and we can see how the band has grown and evolved through each release. It has all the elements that really define Kamelot, but also more modern elements. The perfect choice of guests on ‘Haven’ have really made this album something special and earned it a place as one of my favourite Kamelot albums.
