Kulpa – Interview

KULPA are on the rise. The brit heavy rock crew have picked up glowing comparisons to Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and Muse, and fast making new friends. The band’s new single and video, Bloodshot, is out – https://youtu.be/zwGQWly0frI . We caught up with the guys to find out more:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Jack Kelly – Vocals, Bass Guitar

Nathan Binns – Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals

Liam Smith – Vocals, Rhythm Guitar

Corbin Jenkins – Drums

How and when did the band form?

Kulpa originated from Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2021 via an online musicians page ‘JoinMyBand’.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

After trying out different variations of styles, lineups and tracks, Kulpa really came to life at the end of 2021 in which they found their unique alternative-rock sound. With the addition of Corbin finalising the lineup at the start of 2022, Kulpa really started gelling together musically, releasing their first single ‘Sunny’ with their 2nd & 3rd singles ‘Right Here’ & ‘Ghost’ to follow shortly after, with their debut being a massive success for the group.

Who are your musical influences?

Some of Kulpa’s main musical influences are the likes of Royal Blood, Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro & Nirvana.

Where did the name of the band come from?

The name originally was ‘Culpa Shee’ and was a little inside joke to do with the band, however when lineups changed and we decided to have a rebrand, we shortened it down to ‘Kulpa’ – meaning ‘guilt’ and ‘fault’ in Latin.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Nathan & Liam met back at the end of 2020 via ‘JoinMyBand’ during the first variation of Kulpa when it was ‘Culpa Shee’. Jack joined the lineup at the start of  2021 purely on bass also via JoinMyBand. It wasn’t long after we decided to have a big rebrand in which ‘Kulpa’ was born and Jack moved up to vocals alongside bass. Corbin joined recently at the beginning of 2022.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

Kulpa is a culmination of all of your favourite bands fused to create one unique sound. With our tracks, there’s something for everyone. Indie? We have it. Rock? Definitely! Alternative? You got it!
