LILITH AND THE KNIGHT return with their new single, Fallen, which arrives on 4th May. Before then, we asked the heavy rockers to fill us in on their background:
What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
The full band line up is Lilith on vocals, Adam on guitar and backing vocals, Tom on bass, and Sam on drums.
How and when did the band form? Tell us anything interesting about your hometown.
The band first formed in May 2015 as a 5 piece as the brainchild of front woman Lilith. After holding auditions, the band was put together and we spent the first year playing older songs that Lilith and recorded and getting tight as a band.
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
Only 2 members of the original iteration of the band remain, Lilith and Adam, and we now operate as a 4 piece, with just one guitarist, bass, drums and vocals. The switch from 5 members to 4, was when we felt like the band started to really find our sound. It gave us much more room to explore sonically, and gave everyone in the band space to be heard.
Who are your musical influences?
We have a really diverse musical pallet we draw from. Anything from world music and hip-hop, to jazz and metal. One band we really appreciate is System of a Down. We don’t necessarily sound like them, but we admire their ability to combine socially conscious lyrics with catchy melodies and brutal power. They haven’t brought out any new music in a long time and we feel like they’re a band that the industry misses. They’ve definitely become a blueprint for us and we hope to pick up the baton where they left off.
Where did the name of band come from?
Lilith is a figure in Jewish mythology. Adam’s first wife, formed from the same earth, and often portrayed as an evil Demon of the night, she represents female strength and independence. ‘and the Knight’ part of the band name came about as it just sounded cool! But there’s many deeper things you can read into it.
How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?
We all met through the band. Lilith met Adam at the first auditions for the band. We then met Tom after our original bass player left and recommended Tom to us. And we met our current drummer Sam after holding auditions for the vacant drummer position.
In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?
Firstly, we have a hot, mixed race female fronting the band, which isn’t particularly typical for bands that play heavy music! Lilith’s vocal style too differs from other front women, being rich and soulful in its timbre. Musically, we’re marrying socially conscious lyrics, brute force, melody and harmony, and dynamics and really trying to push the boundaries of heavy music. There’s also a distinct visual image of our band which is different to anything else we’ve come across.
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
We do. We’ll be gigging throughout the year up and down the country. All of our upcoming gig dates can be found on our website and social media, with more to be added!
