Summary:

A rare sweltering hot day in London again, yet the Boston Rooms still pulls a crowd of metal heads melting in black and leather but more than happy to be there for a metal show, and we really were in for a treat!

Up first we have 4 piece heavy metallers Dethonator, these guys warmed up the crowd nicely with some killer dual guitar work and kept things interesting with a good mix of brutality and more melodic moments, which also reflected nicely with the vocals, with bassist Adam Lineker offering heavy growls and complementing the clean vocal talents of Tris Lineker. A really strong start and I loved their set the guys get 4/5 from me!

Second support tonight is classic metal band Neuronspoiler, braving the heat clad in leather these guys deliver a really high energy performance and have got some good support from the local crowd. From the first few riffs and after clocking their stage appearance I got a feeling they took some influence from Judas Priest and Dio; I think this got confirmed when front-man JR hit some crazy high notes through out the set, and they did a good tribute to Dio covering Holy Diver. 3/5 from me, a good set but Dethonator set the bar high!

Last up tonight we are treated to just over an hour of Kobra and the Lotus’ Canadian brand of Heavy Metal! I had been very lucky to catch them play a couple weeks back at Graspop Festival, and I knew we would get that same powerful performance. I was not wrong! Launching into the set with title track from their last album release High Priestess and following on with an old favourite Welcome To My Funeral, the crowd is one singing along and a sea of head-banging. Front-woman Kobra Paige is an absolute vocal powerhouse, she is one of my favourite vocalists, live she just delivers every time and connects with the crowd making everyone feel so appreciated for being there.

Followed up with Battle Of Wraiths fantastic live with plenty of dual guitar work, which really is very defining to Kobra and the Lotus’ sound. Also this track contains a rather killer bass part Brad Kennedy has the walls shaking with, making it even more epic live.

Overall we get a great set with a good mix of all their releases to date, and also a sneak peak from the upcoming release Words Of The Prophets, featuring their take on Canadian rock classics. We were treated to Sign Of The Gypsy Queen originally by April Wine shortly followed by a guitar solo by guest guitarist Bill Hudson. I have been lucky enough to catch this band live a number of times since I first spotted them at Bloodstock 2012 also with various members since then. Seeing Adam Brown also doing a top job on drums and all set I kept clocking him grinning ear to ear loving every moment, I have to say this was the best line up I have seen so far from Kobra and the Lotus, I know Bill and Adam are just guest musicians, but I really hope we get to see more from them.

Bringing the set to a close with fast paced 50 Shades Of Evil leaving a crowd of very contented over heated fans that survived the heat and were in return treated to a fantastic night of Heavy Metal. Gets 5 stars from me, great overall performance and fantastic choice of set-list!

Words Of The Prophets is out August 28th on Spinefarm Records UK.
