Midnight Realm – Polarissima (E.P)

Midnight Realm are a 6 piece melodic death metal band from Newcastle upon Tyne.

The band originally started as a project between guitarist Daniel Russell and former keyboard player Alan Woodham back in 2007 but has since grown to become a complete unit with an ever growing fan base around the world.

In summer 2008 guitarist Stephen Traut joined the band and after Alan’s departure in 2009 the band moved their base to the Newcastle area to continue the search for members. It was at this time the band released their ‘Abstract Connections’ demo to a strong response, with subsequent features on BBC radio and positive reviews from the metal community.

John Dalziel was welcomed to the band in 2009 on keyboard.  In the summer of 2011 the band was strengthened by bassist James Carter and vocalist Liam Posselwhite.

On 25th of November 2011 Midnight Realm released for free download their first full track entitled ‘Solaris’. The record was self produced and mixed by Matt Crawford at Numbskull Audio, features drummer Alex Rüdinger (Threat Signal, Ordinance).

Opening track “Polarissima” lulls you into a false sense of security with its acoustic, haunting theme before the guitars and guttural vocals of “Abstract Connections” kick in.  Merged with electronic elements their sound is similar to Imperial Vengeance.

Which leads us nicely to “Solaris” which is by far my favourite track of the e.p.

With it’s mix of electronic djent and coupled with a contrasting mix of guttural and harmonic vocals with often stunning guitar work thrown in for good measure its no surprise that it was selected to be the first track from the e.p to be publicly released.

“Mystic Revelations” carries on in similar form before “Requiem” brings this great e.p to an end.

Highlight of the e.p: “Solaris”
