Mrs Beckett – Interview

UK burly rock trio, MRS BECKETT, have now released their debut album, Unattractively Needy. The record has picked up widespread acclaim. With that in mind, we caught up with the band to find out more about their background:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Jim Kitson: Guitar and vocals

Pete Peverley: Bass and backing vocals

Dave Pipkin: Drums

How and when did the band form?

The band formed in 2019, we’re from Consett in North East England, an ex-mining and steelworking area.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

We gelled from the first rehearsal and Dave’s refusal to play any covers whatsoever really made us take the writing seriously. The gigging before we recoded the new album really cemented us together

Who are your musical influences?

Motorhead, Motown, Dr Feelgood, Tom Waits, ZZ Top, Little Richard, James Brown.

Where did the name of the band come from?

Jim started writing a musical about a band reforming after one of the original members transitioned. Mrs Beckett comes from a section of dialogue in the play where they argue about what to call the new woman in the band.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Pete and Jim worked together as actors at Northern stage in Newcastle and Jim was in a band with Dave some years ago. The very band that inspired the musical idea.

Where have you played or toured?

We’ve played the North East only and have never toured.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We love to keep it simple, it’s rock n roll about the songs not the solos, We’re not an identikit longhaired hard rock tribute band in all but name.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Tough love, a great smelling bear hug, passionate sex in a warm thunderstorm, a pizza and a cold beer when you haven’t eaten all day…..
