First up on tonight’s varied bill was Long John and the killer blues collective. As the name suggests, they’re a Blues act, and I have to say they’re a damn good one. They’ve got good strong tunes and great vocals, so it’s a really good start to the night.
Next up was Desert Storm. They’re a much heavier act – metal with a stoner/sludge feel, and growling/shouting style vocals. They put in a good performance, but didn’t really manage to get the crowd particularly excited or involved – a good band, but probably not really the right band to support Nashville Pussy as they’re just too heavy to be a good fit.
Finally it was time for Nashville Pussy. From the moment they took to the stage they gave it everything they had – it was a fantastic high energy performance. Guitarist Ruyter Suys was a blur of flying hair most of the time as she headbanged and strutted around the stage. Bonnie Buitrago on bass was similarly energetic, with plenty of hair flying as she played, while Blaine Cartwright was more laid back (it’s hard to headbang when you’re singing). Their dirty rock and roll sound combined with the high energy delivery really went down well.
Watching their set, I had to wonder how they can be playing venues like the Craufurd arms in front of less than a hundred people rather than playing to much bigger crowds – certainly they have the talent and stagecraft, but somehow seem to have been overlooked by many rock fans. It takes a lot to put me in a good mood on a cold midweek night in January, but Nashville Pussy does it with ease. It’s a hell of a gig, and if I get the chance to see Nashville Pussy again I’ll definitely take that chance.
