Almost two years ago, I first chatted with Seb Mikkelsen about this new band, Nine Miles South. Now after a continuous period of playing live gigs, working the pubs and clubs the four guys have produced this little self titled teaser of an EP.
Just three tracks long, but filled to the brim of brilliantly written, played and produced musical talent, in the space of little over 12 minutes this quartet of young musicians play Country Blues Rock, Jazzy Rock, and finish off with a magical melodic rock ballad with a nice modern twist. Now with a surname like Mikkelsen, Seb obviously has some Danish heritage in his blood, and this can be heard in his style and delivery. Listen closely and you might hear a few faint comparisons of Thijs Van Leer, but without the yodelling and whistles on the track ‘Leave Me Be ‘!
They have an individual sound which is heavy on the bass, complemented by intelligent and well thought out drum playing and fronted by the rhythm and lead guitars which bring it all to fruition. One thing missing though, Seb! His vocals just curl and caress the tunes like a warm electric blanket.
So, is it worth you going out to see the guys? Or even chancing a dip into the bottom of your pocket to buy this EP? Too bloody right it is! They play just as great live as in the recording studio, and this is no better a way to start your Nine Miles South CD collection. Mine is on order already, and I can’t wait to get my sweaty hands on it.
Self titled “Nine Miles South” out on sale on the 2nd of April 2015. These guys are no April fools, so make sure your not and get your copy asap!
