Oaf – The Unicorn – 08.03.12

Another one of my special mention reviews as I had headed along to the Unicorn in Camden to catch fantastic Welsh metallers Triaxis and the equally brilliant Elimination on their End of Days tour however as we (Planetmosh) have already reviewed the first show of the tour (which you can read by clicking on this linky thing I have put here) I could afford a lovely night off enjoying the beer (cider) and watching the bands without scribbling down set lists and notes however I do find myself compelled to write a little piece about a band you may or may not have heard of called Oaf.

Oaf is the brainchild childhood friends Dom and James, they are a two piece punk/hardcore outfit with a slightly strange line up, it being just them on Bass & Vocals (Dom) and Drums (James). Dom delivers a frantic distorted bass line to James’s skilfully delivered beats.

Tonight’s set consisted a large amount of new material from their forthcoming new album “Birth School Oaf Death” and general consensus between my party that one of the new  songs  “Fuck Off Seagull” should be an overnight number one hit ! We were also treated to the guy’s homage to funk “Yes Sir I Can Tina Turner” and my personal favourite Oaf track “No More Tickets For The Time Machine” to which the fantastic chorus of “The games up! We’re all fucked! Luck of the draw mate, know what I mean? No more tickets for the time machine. The deals done..3 2 1, Into the future with gravel and beans, No more tickets for the time machine!” Sticks quickly in the mind and I am singing (shouting) along by the next go (well it stuck last night as the fuzzy headedness caused by lots of beer (cider) resulted in me harassing a friend on Facebook for the words).

Dom has promised that the new album will be out “In a couple of months, hopefully” and will be produced by Russ Russell who also produced 2010’s “Botheration” and we will have more news of this as it lands on our desks.

Oaf will next be performing at Hammerfest IV on the Saturday so make sure you check them out if you are there, if you can’t do that you really should utilise the interweb and check out the links below to their MySpace and the Oaf Emporium of Shame and have a listen/buy the album.
