Orange Goblin Review 09.02.13

Orange Goblin - 1142
Saturday night in Manchester and the atmosphere is buzzing, I had just finished my catch up interview with Orange Goblin and gained insight on their plans for 2013 (US and Canada Tour with Clutch)! Orange Goblin have had many trials in their career and I think finally things are starting to pay off. The venue is almost maxed out and it’s only 6:00 pm, doors have only just opened. It is a very early start tonight with a very early finish due to DJ nights but regardless the beer is already flowing and people are preparing for the first act.

Earls of Mars are an extraordinary underground band that have a experimental, unique and abstract sound. They exert all their potential and maturity a new band could ever have. They are an instant crowd pleaser and are fully complimentary to the line up. I can’t think of another band that could of done a better job for the opening act.

There is suddenly this craving for something wild, rocking and heavy…The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell bring forth a hard rock blues mix with a concoction of the classics like ACDC, Status Quo and Rose Tattoo. They have a quirky image that is appealing and charming, a similar look to Rival Sons. Their latest recorded music’Don’t Hear It….Fear It’ released via Rise Above Records and the live experience is somewhat more bigger, louder and more compelling but still a great representation of achievement musicality wise in the production of their LP.
Orange Goblin - 1161

Domination of NQ Live begun when Ben Ward entered onto the stage. There was an explosion of vehemence below as Orange Goblin came in with ‘Scorpionica’. Tonight there wasn’t just any old mosh pit I would say it was a death pit! There were fans flying left, right and everywhere. It was a night made in hell, the set was pulled from their earlier material with a few smashing songs from their latest album A Eulogy for the Damned’. Joe Hoare is such a versatile guitarist he draws his inspiration from the likes of Adrian Smith, Jimi Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughan. His raw talent is in the heart of blues, that gives Orange Goblin invigorating rhythm. They are known as the ‘indestructible masters’ and it is very clear how this nick name came about, enduring drums from Chris Turner, perpetual riffs from Joe Hoare, relentless vocals from Ben Ward and infinite bass from Martyn Millard. Orange Goblin are making their way to the top and they are a band I can guarantee would give you a balls out night.

About Del Preston

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweet shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me and Keith Moon and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweet shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shop owner and his son, that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business really. But sure enough, I got the M&Ms and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
