Plague of Angels, the new band on the block, are ready to release their first interesting and unique single.
Plague of Angels is a brand-new band made up of some well-known and seasoned musicians from the metal scene. The brainchild of Mark Mynett (Kill II This), Jeff Singer (Kill II This, and formerly Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride) and Anabelle Iratni (Veile), this project fuses a vast amount of talent and experience. Rounded out by Simon Robertshaw (ex-Donkerkarnuffel, ex-Frozen in Shadows) who also composed the orchestrations for the Gary Numan tour with Skaparis Orchestra, Rich Shaw (ex-Cradle of Filth), and Oz Wright (Pythia).
So what does this veritable smorgasbord of talent bring to the table then?
Essentially “What Lies Beneath” is a symphonic metal song, powered by Anabelle’s intense voice, backed with melodic riffs from Mark and Rich. The song starts strongly with a very neo-classical edge before a groove-laden main chorus hits. Anabelle’s voice is beautiful and soaring . Now, with this being the project that it is, there are some very ‘Kill II This’ type of industrial electronic flourishes to add something that bit different to the norm.
Everything is very well played and produced by Mark Mynett. However, I think the verse parts of the song are kind of lost, as they feel a bit too ‘low in the mix’, compared to the chorus which is in your face. That said, I have thoroughly enjoyed ‘What Lies Beneath’, It is a fine starting point for the band to move onwards with and I’m expecting some great things to come of them!
