Plainview are a charismatically mental, tour hungry band who are new to the live music circuit with this being only their sixth ever gig (as a band). With their debut album already in the bag (literally in my case), they are out touring it in various locations across England and Wales in support of Martyr de Mona. Planet Mosh managed to catch their London show.
Opening with the gentle boldness of Slip Through Your Fingers, they eased us into their set, but not before singer David Smale had belted out a wee scream. Several more of which appeared throughout their set.
Second song Solitaire opened with a hint of southern rock groove, before tracing her lines to a smooth rock sound and a great eighties rock style guitar solo from David’s brother Johnny Smale.
A new song called Left Yourself Behind was followed by the fantastic Take What You Want full of syncopation and triplets, which showed the strength in David’s voice in both his control of the gentle notes and his controlled emphasis on the rock tones. This was definitely my favourite song of the night for simply sounding different and coming across so well on stage.
The Last Word was a more rocky number, filled with simple yet solid chords, before they closed the set with the more funky sounding Sins of the Father with a strong and steady beat maintained by Chris Williams on drums and Danny Cross on bass. Halfway through Johnny spins out another solo, not too long, not too short, just right! David is an enigmatic front man, full of wit and endearing charm and his close relationship with his brother comes across honestly, as he joins Johnny at times on stage for sections of songs and solos. They work well as a unit with Danny and Chris and I look forward to seeing how Plainview develop and improve as a live band with more shows.
