Swiss act Prisma are without any doubt influenced by one of the most Innovative rock bands of the last twenty years, Tool.
This can lead to either a pale imitation of the original or advancement on the whole sound.
Prisma, however do neither, yet still manage to hold their own against the mighty Tool, to their credit, all bands start off emulating their hero’s, and change the substance and style of music as they progress, however Prisma stay firmly in the Tool rock camp.
“You Name It” is their second release, and I had hoped for a little more diversity, a little more outside influence, but it is not to be. This doesn’t make it a bad record, far from it, as it is very good, it is just that it is still more Tool than Prisma.
It is full of great thick sludgy guitar work, with the drums creating an almost hypnotic tribal rhythm, drawing you in. However it is fairly difficult to tell these tracks apart. For me the highlight is the song “Broker” as it does hint at being different.
Although nothing here feels distinct or original, Prisma execute this style very well, and so get a 7/10 from me.
