Some bands tend to appear just out of nowhere. The last time I have got this feeling, it was with the British band called Protafield. Not much information on the Internet, the official website currently is not working and only some social media profiles. But oh well, the news about their debut album ‘Nemesis‘ reached me anyway.
The very first impression after I listened to this brand new album, was that it is very synthetic and Fear Factory sounding album. Just right after that I have got to know that in fact, band has strong relations with the Americans Fear Factory and Burton C. Bell was involved in the process of making ‘Nemesis’. Oh, what do you know, this album might be yet another pearl for Fear Factory fans, who are not afraid of more synthesized sound.Protafield - Nemesis (2014)
‘Nemesis’ is quite ambitious debut synthesized metal/punk album from the newcomers with great friends. But too many friends might damage your creative process. Many great names were listed in the album credits, as Gary Numan and Queen’s Roger Taylor, as well as Mattias Ia Eklundh and Lance Henriksen (Aliens/Alien vs Predator). I have no doubts, that they can be influential and great inspiration source. On the other hand, when I listen to the band, which sprung up ‘out of nowhere’ and released a debut album, I expect more unique point of view, not a mixture of all great friends’ influences. The new band, which wants to get it’s own auditorium, should not stand in the shadow of the other bands – that will not help.
‘Nemesis’ is a solid set of 12 tracks with a length of almost 50 minutes, which is a great job for the first full-length album, especially with given technical quality and efforts. The album is quite dynamic, stars with strongly constructed and quite aggressive track ‘God-Forced’, which is one of two really memorable tracks of the set. The second one happened to be just the second in track listing as well – ‘Severe Sever’, which has the video clip as well. This one is even more digitalized, that is what probably helps it stand out with the funky tune in for the main line. Sounds something that could go well in the disco. As the album goes, songs get quite different: vocals get clearer, tempo – slows down, some of the tracks get more ballad sound-like and some more guitars. With the 9th track tempo gets faster and goes slow down again, finishing it up with ‘Revolution’, which is quite calm and instrumental, long outro-like track.
Reviewers pick: the 2nd track of the set ‘Severe Sever’. Funky, synthesized, non-binding track for the mood or your feet. Do not think about it too much.
