Purest of Pain are the Dutch winners of this year’s Wacken Metal Battle. They play at Wacken along with all the other Metal Battle winners from all over the world to compete for the Over All Metal Battle Champion!
Can you give the readers a quick introduction to the band.
Purest of Pain is a 5 piece death metal band from The Netherlands, who began in 2010. We are best known for a very energetic live performance.
How would you describe your sound.
Dynamic, raw and aggressive.
How would you describe the metal music scene in your country. What has changed over the last few years?
There is a wide variety of metal bands at hand coming from The Netherlands. Having played loads of Dutch venues over the last 4 years I’ve seen pretty much every sub-genre of metal hitting the stages. I’ve felt that over the last few years the Dutch metal community as a whole has tried to make a good effort in keeping metal a strong and vibrant genre of music. Spawning bands from every direction and keeping metal alive.
Why did you enter the WOA Metal Battle Competition.
You enter this competition once you feel it is the right time in your band career. This year we felt it was our time.
What was your initial reaction when you found out that you have won & you were playing at Wacken.
It’s mind-blowing. Not a single member of our band expected this to happen as competition was rough. You stand in the audience and year the Wacken official shouting the name of your band and time just stopt for a few minutes there. Seeing the logo of your band on the ’14 bill among the biggest out there gives an immense feeling of earned pride.
What was the best and worst part of the competition for you.
Not having expected to win this took a big load of pressure off. We gave our best performance ever that night and everything felt right. You do know that if you have won, others did not. What was amazing about that night was how it did not felt like a competition until the announcement. All the competing bands chilled backstage as if it was a regular gig and the level of comradery was high, even after the announcement.
Would you recommend the competition to other bands. Any hints/tips for bands that are looking to enter?
One important thing; don’t rush it. Enter this competition when you truly feel the time is right.
What can the audience expect from you at the festival.
We will make sure to deliver a live performance worth remembering!
What has been the bands biggest achievement so far.
Surviving for over 4 years and always making progress, in good and bad times, conquering setbacks and keeping the Purest of Pain ship sailing strong, all the way to the holy fields of Wacken!
Have you ever been to Wacken before. If so when and what did you enjoy most about it?
I will have an amazing experience this year as I have never been to Wacken and now I’m playing the anniversary of Wacken reaching the age of half a century. Truly amazing.
What is your opinion of the Wacken line-up.
Wacken line-ups are both diverse and keeping the memory of old legends alive. I find that Wacken ’feels’ the most metal of them all.
Can you sum up Wacken in one sentence.
The ultimate op-air museum of metal, if you bring a random person here for 3 days he will know the true meaning of metal!
Any message you wish to pass on to the PM readers.
