Rat Face Lewey – Interview

RAT FACE LEWEY will release their stunning new album, The Fall Of Man, on Friday 6th September. We caught up with the rising alt-rockers to find out about their background and more .

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

We are a 3 piece band consisting of:

Jonny – Guitars / Lead Vocals, Mav – Bass guitar / Vocals, Gregg – Drums / Vocals / Effects.

How and when did the band form?

We are from Derby and Nottingham. Jonny and Mav are brothers who originally started the band and moved to London to play gigs, write and record music. Jonny and Mav were getting drunk in a pub in Manchester one time and decided to join forces and change our lives forever.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Jonny and Mav have always been present in the band and have collaborated with some great contributors along the way. Our latest incarnation in 2017 which included Gregg on drums was the point when we really started to go up a level especially in our live shows.

Who are your musical influences?

Anything from Nada Surf, Eels, Nirvana, Offspring, Warpaint, Brian Wilson, Metallica, Golden Axe, Wonderboy 3, California Games, Manic Street Preachers, John Frusciante, QOTSA, RHCP and so on….

Where did the name of the band come from?

The name ‘Rat Face Lewey’ exists from the wonder years of childhood. It was the name given to a Den close to where we lived. We would spend countless hours jumping out of trees, lighting fires and re arranging hay bales, completely free and clear. During one of these episodes we were chased by a farmer who came out in his tractor looking for the kids who had re arranged his carefully harvested product. Our older brother Dan shouted head to ‘Rat Face Lewey’. Some of us escaped over the fence to safety, others faced the music. Our first album was called Wonder Before Mess. It describes the conflict and experiences of childhood with the truth and harsh realities of adult life. Similar to themes from the poem, Birches by Robert Frost. The band is a way to escape.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

When you see us play live you will feel the difference.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

I’d write the word ‘forever’ on a piece of paper 100 times.

Do you have a tour on the horizon?

Yes. We will be playing dates around the release of the album in the UK and Europe. Please check our Webpage for full details and ticket information: http://www.ratfacelewey.co.uk/gigs.html
