Following last year’s somewhat lacklustre Where You Are Going To, it’s good to report that Robin Trower is back and then some with his latest offering Time and Emotion.
Jaw dropping guitar work, edged with the wah-wah’s in full cry during the opening The Land of Plenty and throughout, sees Trower stamp his indelible, indefatigable mark on each of the 11 tracks on offer and genuinely shows how the blues should be done.
I’m Gone is a raw, gutsy offering that smacks of Hendrix at the top of his game, while the smokiness of Trower’s vocals on tracks such as Can’t Turn Back The Clock belie the man’s 72 years of age and 50+ years in the business. There’s a passion and drive here that simply isn’t evident on his previous album and it’s this makes Time and Emotion all the better.
Listen to Bitten By The Snake or Try Love and resist, if you can, the urge to break out the air guitar, whilst Make Up Your Mind and You’re The One can only have been composed with one mission in mind: to make the most hardened blues fan weep.
All of these are sublime cuts, but it is without question If You Believe In Me that stands out amongst the rest. It’s rich, funk-laden vibes ricochets around the speakers like some sort of stray laser, its controlled power weaved beneath the fingers of one of the true Yoda’s of contemporary greats.
Time and Emotion is an absolute delight, a master class in blues playing at the very highest of levels and sees Robin Trower back on the very best of form.
