If you have ever been to a Rob Zombie concert, you will know it is more than an event, it is a spectacle, an extravaganza, and all that and more is captured in his first concert film ‘The Zombie Horror Picture Show’.
This feature-length concert film, recorded live over two sizzling nights in Texas, at the Houston and Dallas stops of the Mayhem Festival tour a few months after the release of the latest album ‘Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.’ It includes 16 songs and clocks in at more than 80 minutes.
Nearly half of the songs in the set are from either Zombie’s 1998 debut ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’ or its 2010 sequel ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2.’ He also plays material from 2001‘s ‘The Sinister Urge’ and 2006‘s ‘Educated Horses.’ White Zombie favorites ‘Super Charger Heaven,’ ‘More Human Than Human’ and ‘Thunder Kiss ‘65.’ As well as the Grand Funk Railroad cover ‘We’re An American Band’.
This is an awesome stage performance by a truly unique artist. This is more than a DVD of the concert; this is as much an experience as the concert was, if not more so. Rob has overseen production and has applied his know how as a film maker and director to give us a truly unique experience. The film is very stylized in so many different ways; the picture moves from crystal clear HD to old looking monster movie film effects and back again. Brilliant out of focus shots and fast direction keep the entertainment going, while the crowd shots really only center on semi-naked ladies and guys in costume. But what else is there at a Zombie show?
While the effects are dammed good and entertaining, Zombie and his group are the stars of the show, with great performances from guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D. and drummer Ginger Fish keeping this show on the right side of crazy.
Shockingly there are no extras, but then again why would you want to see Zombie in make-up a good few hours before stage time, or indeed how the stage show is set up, Zombie is a master showman, so let’s leave him to his mystique.
This is a superb live concert film that both effectively captures and then helps recreate the atmosphere of a Zombie live show in your living room.
