Summary:

The hideous Hellspawn of “Astro Creep” and “Hellbilly Deluxe”, “ Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor” is a collection of magnificient monsters drawn straight from the treacherous mind of Rock’s very own Superbeasto. Rob Zombie has once again gone stratospheric.

RobZombieVRRVCoverArtRob Zombie is the most creative and busiest of all modern day rock stars. Numerous movies, publications, animations and clothing lines abound, yet he still has time to get his ass into the studio and create twelve new anarchic anthems. Excluding White Zombie releases, “Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor” is album number five for the Z-Man and is another defining moment from the most distinctive sounding artist of the last thirty years.

When a new Zombie album appears, there are prerequisites to be expected. Industrial riffs, drawling Yeahs, classic TV/movie outtakes and horror-tastic themes, all congealed by a dash of inspired insanity. While Rob has always experimented with new sounds and styles, the foundation of his sound has consistently remained true. The sordid riff of “Teenage Nosferatu Pussy” goosesteps us towards the garage rock fusion of “Dead City Radio and the New Gods of Supertown”. Both songs were included on the recent Record Story Day 10” single and deservedly so.  Soundbytes like “The radio has changed our lives and possibly saved our lives” proliferate and add that little extra zing to quiet moments of the album. On “Revelation Revolution”, very familiar Zombie ground is tread.  But it’s on the ridiculously titled “Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga” that the Pentagram Peter Pan flogs and flays us with an infectious vocal hook that has the capability of being epidemic. The chorus of “Rock And Roll (In a Black Hole)” is an astounding but small highlight in a song that is a momentum killer. Thankfully, the raucous rampage of “Behold the Pretty Filthy Creatures”, the punk fueled debauchery of “Lucifer Rising” and a voracious version of Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American band” restore said momentum and kick it into overdrive.

Although VRRV has Rob Zombie’s demonic stamp all over it, the talented contribution of Piggy D, John 5 and Ginger Fish must be acknowledged. No more so than on the crust-groove of “White Thrash Freaks” and the pestilent two minute thrill ride of “Trade in Your Guns for a Coffin”. Album highlight, “The Girl Who Loved the Monsters” is already destined to be on the Rob Zombie encore setlist. The bridge of “set them free, let them be, the monsters live in you and me” couldn’t be more appropriate for a man who has embraced ghoulish grandeur all through the many facets of his career.
