The latest in a new generation of blackened metal acts to emerge from the previously very un-metal (apart from the likes of Aborted and Enthroned) domain of Belgium, Saille (pronounced sahl-yeh) plough the sort of dark gothicism meets extreme brutality route previously explored by acts such as Akercocke.
A concept album based around tales by horror writers such as Lovecraft, Poe and King, ‘Eldritch’ – which in itself is an adjective defining a “weird, sinister, unearthly or ghostly” scream – is in turn a dark and ethereal album, characterized by moments of dense foreboding counterpointed with those of eloquent beauty. Discordant keyboards mix with mayhemic melodies, while behemothic blastbeats counterpoint and exacerbate the glory of huge choral symphonics, against which the visceral vocals snap, snarl and entwine themselves into the darkest recesses of your darkened aural senses.
The result is an extremely well constructed and produced album which enthrals the listener and makes you want to explore the sort of dank depths even further than you previously would have dared…
