With the band drawing its three members from as far afield as Cyprus and Finland but now based in the UK, this debut EP was originally released as a single-sided 12″ single by the Iron Bonehead label back in 2013, but has now been picked up for digital re-issue by the Ireland-based team at Invictus Productions.
It’s two tracks – four, if you count the two “outros” (which are basically atmospheric endgames for each of the two tracks they follow)- hail from the heavier end of the doom/sludge meets DM spectrum. ‘Salvific Dance’ starts off extremely slowly and atmospherically, building the sense of impending menace with brooding aplomb, before the dervish-dance of the main riff kicks in and the menace is fulfilled with dense, dramatic vocals that sound like they have been dragged from the very bowels of Hades itself.
The title track pursues a more traditional death metal route right from the first chord: effective and precise blastbeating lays down the foundation for a solid bass riff, which in turn underpins another winding whirlygig of a main melody, while the vocals again grunt and growl with suitably hair-raising menace.
Despite their relative youth, Sepulchral Temple definitely have laid down a strong marker for the future, and it is good to see this slab of sludgy sliminess seeing the dark of the day once again.
