The Assembly, Leamington Spas stunning 1000 capacity Art Deco venue will host a rare UK live gig by Sham 69s original 1977 line up, featuring Dave Parsons (Guitar), Dave Dregunne (Bass), and of course their legendary frontman Jimmy Pursey (Vocals). The show is one of just a handful of gigs this year from this iconic punk band.
Jimmy Pursey says, ”I cant wait to get back to play The Assembly in Leamington. We played a storming show here to a packed house back in 2012 and it was without doubt one of my favourite shows of the year.”
Sham 69 released their first single, “I Don’t Wanna in August 1977. Produced by John Cale (Velvet Underground), its success in the independent charts prompted Polydor Records to sign the band. Their major label debut was “Borstal Breakout” in January 1978, followed by chart success with “Angels With Dirty Faces” (reaching number 19 in May 1978) and “If the Kids Are United” (number 9 in July 1978).
The group had further chart success with “Hurry Up Harry” (number 10 in October 1978), which came from their first full studio album, That’s Life. A new version, “Hurry Up, England” was recorded in 2006 with Christian O’Connell and Graham Coxon as Absolute Radio’s World Cup theme, and it also reached number 10 in the UK Charts. Sham 69 are the only Punk rock band to have achieved six UK Top 20 chart singles.
Support comes from Angelic Upstarts featuring founder member Mensi (Vocals), who are enjoying a purple patch with rave reviews of their inspiring recent live performances.
